ABOUT VOLUNTEERING
Volunteers work in sport, culture, heritage, community, arts, health, the environment, science and technology…. Just about anywhere!
Coaching a kids’ netball, team, managing the school football team, working in the school canteen, helping out at a sporting carnival, working in the library or driving a community bus are only some of the activities volunteers do.
In Sydney this year hundreds of volunteers will be the public face of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Volunteers will help ensure that visitors leave with a positive view of Australia and fond memories of the Games.
Volunteers play a vital role within our community. They are individuals, families, students, unemployed or retired. Volunteering is not only helping others, but it is gaining and learning practical experience, applying your skills and making new friends.
International Year of Volunteers is designed to enhance the recognition of volunteer service, with particular emphasis on activities at a local level. These activities are a valuable opportunity to increase volunteer awareness and encourage growth in the volunteer service sector.
Volunteering is not only an opportunity to help others, but to explore different career options and become involved in the community.
This web site was created by Volunteer Students who wanted to gain some real project skills whilst making a significant contribution to society. The project has provided the students with skills that will make them an asset to any employer. The end product has provided a focal point for IYV 2001 in Australia. Everybody wins!
